The Knorr-Bremse EDT®101 reacts to a derailment by triggering immediate emergency braking and helps protect people, goods and the environment. The pneumatic, UIC-homologated system operates as a stand-alone unit and can be retrofitted to existing freight cars with minimal effort.
The EDT®101 uses a spring-mass valve to detect elevated vertical acceleration at the wagon chassis. When a derailment occurs, it triggers emergency braking by venting the main brake pipe. The device then returns on its own to the rest position; a red indicator pin remains visible and identifies which of the two detectors fitted to the wagon has responded. If required, the detector can be taken out of service manually using the stopcock on its mounting bracket. The system has proven itself in worldwide service for many years.
