X.Sectional: Connecting Expertise Across the Rail Ecosystem

At InnoTrans 2026, the Cross-sectional (X.Sectional) Solution Area demonstrates how Knorr-Bremse connects technologies, services and digital innovations across vehicle, infrastructure and operational domains. By bringing together data-driven services, digital solutions, embedded electronics and lifecycle expertise, X.Sectional supports a more connected, efficient and future-ready rail ecosystem.

To learn more, we spoke with Kathrin Moder, Vice President RailServices, Markus Schumann, FGL – Global Technical & Digital Services, and Tomislav Radjenovic, Head of Sales & Marketing, about the role of X.Sectional Solutions, what it means to be a Rail Mobility Visioneer, and what visitors can expect at InnoTrans 2026.

What does the solution area “X.Sectional” stand for?

"For me, X.Sectional stands for products and services that are providing value add throughout the complete portfolio of Knorr-Bremse, be it by providing data driven availability services for our customers´ trains, collision avoidance systems or monitoring for railway infrastructure. This is also something, where our wheel flat protection system with integrated monitoring can contribute.

In addition, we encourage the industry to engage in the European Rail Data Space, in which we see the perfect platform to share and use data.

But also, the hands-on part of the service should have focus. Here we help to keep trains in service with component maintenance and overhaul of our systems. Modernization projects even bring trains into a extended phase of their life, giving the upgrades to todays´ state of art."

"Our Embedded Electronic Solutions represent the joint approach of duagon and Selectron to building integrated and future-ready rail systems. As a result of joining forces, we can now offer our customers both tailored, project-specific solutions and modular, ready-to-use products. By combining our solutions for train communication, train control and computing hardware we bring together all the key elements required for reliable, safe and scalable rail systems.

This year, our main focus areas are our networking and cybersecurity technologies, as well as computing hardware for functional safety, AI systems, and performance-intensive applications. Highlights certainly include the new ARiS portfolio for train control and the BL74A box PC with integrated AI modules. Our entire portfolio is built for brand-new trains, but just as ready for use in existing fleets as retrofit projects."

What does it mean to be a “Rail Mobility Visioneer”?

"Rail is the most important eco-friendly transport mode already – although it has room for improvement. A lot of that will happen only if we think in solutions beyond todays´ rail operations – and be visionary to achieve this.

We have helped our customers to optimize operations and maintenance."

"For me, being a “Rail Mobility Visioneer” means thinking beyond individual products and focusing on the bigger picture. It is about creating solutions that not only meet today’s requirements but also provide a reliable and scalable foundation for the future. In our Embedded Electronic Solutions, this is reflected in a consistent focus on interoperability, modularity and long-term reliability. We aim to give our customers the flexibility to adapt their systems over time while ensuring stable and safe operation throughout the entire lifecycle."

What can visitors look forward to at InnoTrans 2026?

"I am convinced that we all together in the railway industry will only achieve the full benefit and optimized operations when we collaborate openly, Thus, data sharing and the cross-domain and cross-stakeholder use of information is vital. Stop by and let´s discuss!"

"What personally excites me most is how our combined strengths come together to create real customer value. We are not just offering individual components – we are enabling integrated solutions that simplify system design and operation.

Visitors at our booth and readers of the KB Rail Newsroom can look forward to seeing how our technologies from duagon and Selectron interact seamlessly. It is this combination of expertise, integration and practical applicability that makes Embedded Electronic Solutions a strong foundation for the next generation of rail systems.

And this is just a part of what we will showcase – I invite everyone to visit us in Hall 27, Booth 740, to explore the full scope of our solutions."
