Regional and Commuter Trains for diverse applications.

Regional trains bring commuters in to the city from the surrounding area and take holidaymakers and day trippers out into the countryside. Transportation associations run networks covering entire regions. They connect provincial stations to the high-speed network and provide a fast link between airports and city centers. The applications for regional trains are probably more diverse than for any other type of rail vehicle – and Knorr-Bremse is an experienced developer of many of their subsystems.

While operators demand reliability and cost-effectiveness, comfort is a priority for passengers – they have come to expect features like wide doors, inter-car gangways and Wi-Fi. Manufacturers supply different traction systems and train configurations depending on the exact nature of the route and the specific requirements. For high passenger capacities, they can either add center cars between the multiple units or design the train as a double-decker from the outset.

Air Supply / Treatment

Intelligent Air Supply Unit 'AirSupply Smart'

Air supply systems supply the compressed air required by the braking system and other subsystems. The key components for regional and commuter train applications are screw compressors 'ScrewSupply' or oil-free compressors 'PistonSupply Eco' and adaptive control air dryers 'DrySupply'.

Bogie Equipment

Bogie Equipment

The bogie equipment is the part of the braking system that generates the braking force – and regional and commuter trains have high performance requirements in this area. Wheel-mounted brake discs 'ProDisc Wheel', compact brake calipers 'WheelAct' and electromagnetic track brakes 'MagnetAct Flex' bring the train to a halt rapidly and safely.

Friction Technologies

Friction Technologies

Knorr-Bremse’s friction portfolio features Ultrapad sintered brake pads, including the Flexpad, and Propad organic brake pads that have all been specially developed for regional and commuter train applications.

Brake Control

'MotionLead family'
Track Brake Control
Brake Control and Wheel Slide Protection
Pantograph Control

The brake control system on regional and commuter trains is responsible for blending the different braking systems. The brake control system 'CubeControl', 'FlexControl Modular' and Modular Magnetic Track Brake Control 'MagnetControl' cover a wide range of applications. The pantograph control system raises and lowers the pantograph and keeps it precisely positioned against the overhead lines while the vehicle is in motion.

Sanding Systems

Sanding System 'SandGrip Pneumatic' and 'SandGrip Mechanic'

Sanding systems can make a significant contribution to reducing braking distances. Systems for regional and commuter trains comprise sand dosing systems, sand pipe heaters, sand level monitors, sand boxes, sand box covers and sand flow sensors.

Wiper Systems / Wash Systems

Windscreen Wiper and Wash System

Windscreen wiper and wash systems ensure that the driver always has a clear view. Systems for regional and commuter trains comprise wiper drives, arms and blades, control units, operating controls, washer water tanks, washer pumps and rain sensors.

Entrance Systems

Entrance System

Different entrance system configurations are available for regional and commuter applications, depending on the application scenario and the operator’s requirements. The options include aluminum or stainless steel “sandwich” door leaves with obstacle detection, various door control units and door drives, and sliding and folding steps.

Control Systems / TCMS

Router, Vehicle Control Unit, Threat Detection Solution, Switch, Smartio®

Train Control and Management Systems (TCMS) are the technological nerve center of modern regional and commuter trains, connecting the subsystems to each other and to the central vehicle control system. They are specifically tailored to a wide range of different customer requirements and now also incorporate powerful system diagnostics tools and smart fleet management systems. The WSP3 expansion module seamlessly integrates wheel slide protection functionality with the regional or commuter train’s TCMS. The TDS Defense in Depth Threat Detection Solution detects cyberthreats in their early stages.

Climate Systems

HVAC System

Whatever the outside weather, regional and commuter train passengers and drivers expect comfortable on-board temperatures. Specially developed systems for both types of train ensure that this expectation is met.

Electrical Systems

Auxiliary Power Supply

Knorr-Bremse develops electrical traction equipment either for platform-based regional and commuter trains or as complete, customized packages from a single source, seamlessly integrating efficient and reliable power supplies for electrical equipment such as customer power points or infotainment and HVAC systems.

Power Electrics

Brake Resistor, Ecometer, Smart-Integrated-Functional-Unit

Regional and commuter trains rely on a huge array of electro-mechanical and electrical control components. Contactors, disconnectors and resistors are designed to meet the individual requirements of each application scenario. The modular Smart-Integrated-Functional-Unit (SIFU) raises the bar by integrating high voltage components with a smart monitoring and control system.

Sanitary Systems

Sanitary Systems

The many different configurations for sanitary systems optimized for regional trains range from fully integrated vacuum-toilet systems to compact WC modules – equipped with condition-based maintenance (CBM) functions on request. A global service network provides fast, efficient maintenance and repair services.

Coupling Systems

Coupling Systems

Coupling Systems are complex multi-purpose systems that join up regional and commuter trains, coupling their mechanical, pneumatic and electrical components. Out on the track, they check, manage and control tractive forces while at the same time compensating for relative movements between cars. This task is performed by automatic center buffer couplers in the form of front couplers.
