Digital Automatic Couplers will streamline rail freight

To achieve EU climate targets, the rail freight industry must increase its market share. To do this, the rail network must become more efficient and, above all, more competitive. Here, cutting-edge technology can make a vital contribution. As a key component in the Digital Freight Train (DFT), this is precisely what the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC) does – acting as a major enabler for achieving EU climate targets. The DAC is a smart, state-of-the-art coupling system for freight cars that combines mechanical coupling with support for digital data communication. As well as automatic coupling, the system makes it possible to automate other, traditionally manual train processes. The end-to-end connection of power and data lines enables functions such as automated brake testing, train integrity checks and digital condition monitoring.

Our coupling systems for rail freight

Knorr-Bremse’s FreightLink couplers for freight cars and HybridLink couplers for locomotives are paving the way for rail freight’s transition into the digital age. Not only are they automating the (currently manual) coupling process – our innovative electrical interface is also enabling the automation and digitalization of the entire rail freight system.

FreightLink (for freight cars)

The FreightLink Digital Automatic Coupler was designed specifically for the European market, providing digital functions that complement the mechanical coupling function. By supporting the automatic coupling of mechanical connections, air lines, power lines and data lines, as well as automatic decoupling, our DAC Type 5 coupling system saves time and money by optimizing train processes. The optimized system also allows for longer, heavier trains.

HybridLink (for locomotives)

HybridLink is a flexible, hybrid coupling solution designed for the European market. It connects locomotives and freight cars equipped with DACs or screw couplings, and is fully compatible with both systems – ideal for mixed fleets during the digital migration phase.

Our coupling systems: perfectly tailored to your needs

  • Automatic coupling and decoupling: The system automatically connects mechanical, pneumatic and electrical functions – no more need for labor-intensive shunting or manual decoupling.
  • End-to-end power supply and data feed: The integrated electric contact coupler supports the automatic, end-to-end connection of power and data lines from the locomotive right through to the last freight car. It will enable further automation of manual train processes as freight trains become increasingly digital.
  • Streamlined processes, higher capacity: The use of cutting-edge automated coupling technologies speeds up shunting processes, releasing extra capacity. This significantly improves the overall performance of rail freight operations.
  • Hybrid operation for a smoother transition: Flexible coupling systems like our hybrid couplers allow operators to combine manual screw couplers with digital automatic couplers. This gives locomotives the flexibility to switch between old and new systems, in turn reducing the cost of migration.
  • Greater safety: Thanks to the automatic and digital functions enabled by the DAC, personnel no longer need to work on or between freight cars.

We are actively spearheading the EU-wide rollout of the Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC) as the key technology for enabling tomorrow’s safe, efficient, digitalized transportation of freight by rail. As a member of Europe’s Rail and the European DAC Delivery programme, we are working with our partners to produce a standardized, pan-European system design and certification process.
