Regan's kayaking journey began in 2017 when he discovered after-school kayaking lessons. Previously a swimmer, Regan was drawn to the challenge of mastering a new water sport. "At the start, I was just eager to get out on the water and experience sitting in a boat for the first time and managing to stay upright," Regan recalls. This initial curiosity quickly evolved into a passionate pursuit of excellence.
Rapid Progress
From local races to national regattas, Regan's progress in the sport has been nothing short of impressive. Within a year of starting, he was competing at national levels, consistently aiming for top spots in his age categories. His determination led him to Team GB selection events, and by his third attempt, Regan achieved the remarkable feat of representing his country at world championships.
Versatility on the Water
Regan's kayaking prowess spans multiple disciplines, showcasing his versatility and dedication:
- Sprint Racing: Competing in 200m, 500m, or 1000m races against nine other paddlers.
- Marathon Racing: Tackling gruelling 20km races that include a running portion called a portage.
- Wild Water Racing: Navigating rapids in time trial events, including sprints (around 2 minutes) and classics (10 to 35 minutes).
This multi-disciplinary approach has contributed to Regan's rounded skills and competitive edge.

As an Engineering Technician Apprentice at Knorr-Bremse, Regan faces the challenge of balancing his professional development with his sporting ambitions. "I balance my apprenticeship and training by working around work as that takes up much of the day," Regan explains. His typical day involves unwinding for an hour after work before diving into late afternoon and evening training sessions.
Recognition and Support
Regan's hard work has paid off, earning him a ranking in the top 10 in Britain for under-18s. "It's surreal," Regan reflects, "and it just means that all the hard work I'm putting into training is paying off."
Knorr-Bremse has played a crucial role in Regan's journey through a generous donation. This support has helped Regan acquire essential equipment and fund trips to international events, including European and World championships, which are self-funded adventures.
Overcoming Challenges
Regan's path hasn't been without obstacles. One of his most challenging moments came during his first year as an apprentice in Birmingham. "Breaking and finding a new routine was hard," Regan admits. However, his determination shone through as he adapted his training regimen, utilising available resources and maximising weekend training sessions at home.
Looking to the Future
With his eyes set on the horizon, Regan has both short-term and long-term goals that showcase his ambition:
- Short-term: Maintain his position on Team GB and achieve promotion to Division 2 in marathon racing.
- Long-term: Secure senior world championship medals and aim for Olympic participation.

Regan's kayaking experience has profoundly influenced his approach to work. "Kayaking has influenced me at work due to me being committed for such a long time," he reflects. "This has shown me that if I put my mind to it, I can achieve it, no matter how much I have to put forth."
